The National Kidney Foundation of Southern California is Gearing Up for the U.S. Transplant Games 2010!
The goal of the Transplant Games is to raise awareness of the success of organ transplants, increase the number or organ donors, and to show public gratitude to donor families.
Transplant Athletics
The success of the U.S. Transplant Games has created new opportunities to demonstrate the success of transplantation and the critical need for additional donors. The transplant community has concerted their efforts to produce successful programs that celebrate the recovery of formerly very ill individuals. Through the lifesaving miracle of transplantation, they are now able to live full and productive lives – this fact is truly exemplified through the arena of athletic competition.
Team Southern California
Team Southern California is currently in full preparation for the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games, scheduled for July 30 - August 4 in Madison, Wisconson. The team's priorities are raising funds, honing athletic skill, and raising awareness for organ donation and transplantation. The team is also actively recruiting transplant recipients to join its medal-winning team.
For the 2008 U.S. Transplant Games in Pittsburgh, PH, Team SoCal sent over 100 athletes and donor family members. The Team brought home over 40 medals in racquetball, bowling, tennis, track and field and earned another honor in Volleyball.
For the 2006 U.S. Transplant Games in Louisville, Kentucky, Team SoCal sent over 100 athletes and donor family members. Success is not unfamiliar to this team – they brought home over 30 medals in bowling, racquetball, tennis, and track & field. The 2002 and 2004 Transplant Games were similarly successful. At the 2000 Games, our own Maia Thayer, age 11, became one of two recipients to be honored with the "Mickey Mantle Courage Award".
